Enhancements to Notifications in the Last Year

A.J. Schifano, Product Manager for Oracle JD Edwards, presented an overview of the recent enhancements to notifications made within the last year.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Notifications were designed as a way to keep JD Edwards users in tune and up to date with what is going on within their business without having to be chained to their desk and logged into JD Edwards. Users can receive notifications through email, the JD Edwards user interface, or SMS text messages when issues come up, thresholds are met, etc.

How to Create a Notification

A business analyst can design the notification through Orchestrator Studio. They define a watchlist or an orchestration to evaluate the notification criteria. They then define inputs to allow subscribers to personalize the notification. Next, they attach the notification to a periodic schedule and share it as a user defined object (UDO). An end user then subscribes to a notification by choosing from a list of available notifications, choosing how to receive the notification, and providing inputs to personalize the notification.

Notifications and assigned subscriptions include the roles of the business analyst, administrator, assigner, and subscribers by role. The business analyst is responsible for defining the notification. The business analyst/administrator publishes the notification as a UDO, and the assigner assigns subscriptions to roles. Subscribers can accept, opt out, or override.

Recent Enhancements to Notifications

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Notifications have undergone a continuous stream of enhancements since 2017.

In 2017, with 9.2.2.1, JD Edwards introduced Orchestrator Studio 6.0.2, Message Services, Notifications, and Scheduler.

In 2018, with 9.2.2.4 and 9.2.3.1, they introduced Orchestrator Studio 6.1.0 and 7.0, assigned subscriptions, Resilient Scheduler, the ability to launch orchestrations and notifications from a business function, and Message Center.

In 2019, with 9.2.3.2. and 9.2.3.3 and 9.2.3.4, they introduced Orchestrator Studio 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, multiple actions in messages, pretext and post text for links, search for subscriptions, Categories, Category Manager, Orchestrations as actions, URLs as actions, report attachments, and the ability to launch notifications from a form extension.

There were several enhancements to orchestration and notifications messages in Tools 9.2.3.2 and Orchestrator Studio 7.1.1. The Notification message now has multiple action links in the message with pretext and post-text for links. The user is also able to launch a personal form in Item Availability Summary and specify the UDOs in the links.

With Tools 9.2.3.3 and Orchestrator Studio 7.2.0, users can launch to an orchestration or launch to a URL from the Notification message.

Users can also send an email message with an Attached Report from the Notification message with Tools 9.2.3.3 and Orchestrator Studio 7.2.0.

With Tools 9.2.3.3, users can leverage the Message Center on iPads. The Message Center on the iPad has the generally equivalent functionality to using Message Center on a desktop browser. The user is able to take their critical alerts with them and merely click the links to take action.

Preconfigured notifications can be downloaded to use as or as examples like these listed. Pushing just the information that you need about a threshold being met, transactions in error or out of balance, something on hold, a status change, an approval that is waiting, or a simple reminder is an easy way to keep users informed. Also, preconfigured notifications can be used to expedite approvals to improve process efficiency in purchase orders, requisitions, payee changes, timecards, delinquency notices, project change requests, and price changes.  Preconfigured notifications can also be used for proactive notifications across EnterpriseOne for Financial Management, Sales Order Management, Procurement Management, Manufacturing, Transportation Management, Capital Asset Management, Projects, Real Estate Management, Payroll and HCM, Service Management, Requisition Self Service, Advanced Pricing, and Work Order Management.

A.J. ended his presentation with a list of call to action items:

  • Think about what users need to know immediately
  • Review the list of preconfigured notifications
  • Make a list of notifications that would make users more productive, effective, or responsive
  • Update EnterpriseOne Tools to 9.2.3.4
