The JDE Connection: Episode 105 – Live from BP4D 2026! Modernization Starts with Curiosity, Not Code

Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper

When people hear the word “modernization,” they often picture a massive, expensive initiative involving months of planning, endless meetings, and more acronyms than anyone should reasonably be expected to remember. But in our experience, modernization rarely begins with a grand strategy.

It starts with a simple question:

How are people actually using JD Edwards today?

That question sounds straightforward, but the answer can reveal opportunities hiding in plain sight. It can show us where users are wasting clicks, where customizations no longer serve a purpose, and where small changes could make a meaningful difference in someone’s daily work.

In this episode of The JDE Connection, recorded live from BP4D in Dallas, we explore one of the most underutilized tools in JD Edwards: Object Usage Tracking. And while it may not be the flashiest feature in EnterpriseOne, it might be one of the most practical starting points for modernization.

The Big Idea: Your System Is Already Telling You What Needs Attention

Every day, users leave behind a trail of digital breadcrumbs. They open applications. They launch versions. They bounce between inquiries. They revisit the same screens over and over again. Most organizations know these patterns exist, but few take the time to examine them. That’s where Object Usage Tracking comes in.

Introduced in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2.1.2, this feature captures how often applications, versions, and forms are accessed. On the surface, it was designed to help teams identify what should be tested before an upgrade. But the real value goes far beyond testing. It gives us visibility. And visibility leads to better decisions.

Instead of guessing which versions are critical, which menus are cluttered, or which processes frustrate users, we can rely on actual usage data to tell us where to focus our efforts.

Insight #1: Complexity Builds Over Time

Every long-running JD Edwards system accumulates a bit of organizational archaeology—copied versions, expanding menus, and workflows no one dares remove “just in case.” The real issue isn’t the number of versions; it’s not knowing which ones are still useful. Usage tracking replaces guesswork with evidence, making cleanup a confident, data-driven decision.

Insight #2: Data Reveals What, People Explain Why

System data can show patterns, but it can’t explain intent. To understand why users move through the system the way they do, we need to observe their work and ask thoughtful questions about what slows them down. Those conversations build trust and uncover opportunities that technology alone would never reveal.

Insight #3: Small Changes Create Big Momentum

Modernization often starts with modest improvements—a CafeOne panel, a grid extension, a simplified menu, or retiring unused versions. Individually these changes are small, but together they reduce friction and improve the user experience. When IT consistently makes work easier, users begin to see them not just as support, but as trusted partners.

Follow the Breadcrumbs

If you’re wondering where to start modernizing your JDE environment, start by listening to what your system is already saying.

  • Turn on Object Usage Tracking.
  • Review the patterns.
  • Identify the most frequently used applications and versions.
  • Observe users in action.
  • Look for opportunities to remove clicks and simplify workflows.

The beauty of this approach is that it doesn’t require a massive budget or a sweeping initiative. It requires curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn from both the data and the people behind it. In other words, modernization starts by paying attention.

Midwesternism of the Day

This episode’s Midwesternism celebrates a hairstyle so iconic that it has inspired annual rankings, viral videos, and an entire vocabulary of terms like “flow,” “salad,” and “lettuce.” Whether you wore one proudly or merely admired it from the bleachers, this legendary look has become a rite of passage in certain northern states where winter and sports are practically synonymous. You’ll have to listen to the episode to hear exactly what we’re talking about.
