Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper
Hey JDE Connection listeners! Chandra and Paul here with Episode 67, and this week we’re diving into the wild (and sometimes confusing) world of UDO security in JD Edwards — because what’s more fun than access controls and lifecycle management? Some might argue, watching paint dry, but alas we do our best to make it fun… well, as fun as security gets.
What Are UDOs Again?
If you’re scratching your head wondering, “Wait, what’s a UDO?” or “Web Object, huh?”—you’re not alone. We kick things off with a lighthearted explanation of User Defined Objects, and how they help users tailor JD Edwards without the technical debt of customizations.
Think form extensions, grid formats, Cafe One layouts, watchlists, logic extensions—the whole buffet of personalization options—all available on the glass and deployable without traditional package builds.
Why Security for UDOs Matters
Because UDOs are powerful, we need the right guardrails. In this episode, we walk through the UDO lifecycle, and all the security checkpoints that come with it:
- Feature Security – Turning on access to the UDO type itself (Cafe One, form extensions, etc.)
- Action Security – Controlling who can create, publish, or modify UDOs
- View Security – Managing who can actually see and use the UDO once it’s published
Chandra explains how her team handles UDOs by role, walks through examples using P98220U, and even calls out the sometimes-confusing terminology around objects, roles, and views.
Real Talk About Lifecycle
Paul plays the role of curious end user while Chandra breaks down the full process from enablement to deployment. If you’ve ever wondered how to:
- Share a Cafe One layout with your whole purchasing team
- Prevent random “test01” grid formats from cluttering up your interface
- Set up secure service accounts for orchestrations
…this is your episode.
We also touch on best practices (or the lack thereof) for orchestrations and service user IDs, and how important it is to think ahead about auditing, SOX compliance, and future troubleshooting.
Midwesternism of the Week
Colloquialisms abound! This week Chandra uses some Midwestern humor to describe the Florida weather patterns and shares a sweet story about her dad’s commentary on Minnesota crops, demonstrating that, “knee high by the 4th of July”, is not just a cornfield cliché—it’s a way of life.
Wrapping It Up
UDO security in JD Edwards doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right setup and a little humor, you can empower your citizen developers and keep your systems safe.
