Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper
Welcome back, JDE Connection listeners! We’re your hosts Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper and we are thrilled to have you join us for another exciting episode of your favorite podcast. This week, we’re diving into the world of User Defined Objects, or UDOs, to kick off the new year with some valuable insights and engaging conversation.
A Fun Start to the New Year
Paul has been on a fitness streak, running every day for the past 10 days. As for me, I’m preparing for the Disney Marathon this weekend, though my training took a hit thanks to a nasty bout of bronchitis. But as I head to Orlando, I plan to take it easy, have fun, and snap some photos with Mickey and Minnie along the way.
What Are UDOs?
So, what exactly are User Defined Objects? Paul summed it up brilliantly: UDOs are part of the Citizen Developer Framework, providing users with no-code and low-code tools to personalize, extend, and manage their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne experience. From grid formats to orchestrations, UDOs empower users to tailor their systems without diving into the dreaded “C-word” (customizations, of course!).
Highlights from the Episode
We took a high-level tour of the 22 UDO types available as of Release 25, focusing on their practical applications. Here are some key takeaways:
- Personalization: Tools like grid formats and saved queries help simplify and enhance user experiences by letting you customize data layouts and filter criteria. We talked about one of Paul’s favorite features: form personalization. Imagine removing unnecessary fields, renaming them, or even resizing and repositioning them on the fly – all without a developer. These tools save time, reduce noise, and make training new users a breeze.
- Extensibility: Form extensions take personalization further, enabling you to add business view columns, orchestrations, and new form controls to your applications. In addition, logic extensions provide a “no code” way of appending conditions, calculations, and basic logic to a form.
Why UDOs Matter
As Paul shared, UDOs are about giving power back to the users. They eliminate technical debt, reduce reliance on customizations, and make upgrades and updates far less painful. Whether you’re a business analyst or an end-user, UDOs let you shape your JD Edwards system to meet your unique needs.
Looking Ahead
There’s so much more to say about UDOs that we couldn’t fit it all into one episode. That’s why we’re making this a two-parter! In our next episode, we’ll dive deeper into orchestrations, workflow management, and other advanced features.
Midwesternism of the Day
As always, we wrapped up with a lighthearted Midwest-inspired discussion. This time, we shared some fun facts about another outdoor ice related winter activity common in the Midwest.
