The JDE Connection: Episode 10 – Interview with Andrew Ostdiek – Part 3: Change Leaders

Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper

Welcome back to the latest JDE Connection blog with your hosts Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper, where we peel back the layers of JDE talk to connect you with the real stories and personalities behind JD Edwards. This time, we’re concluding our fantastic conversation, featuring the insightful Andrew Ostdiek.

In this episode, we kicked things off with Andrew by unpacking a term that really resonated with us: “change leaders.” This concept goes beyond our usual roles; it encapsulates the essence of what business analysts strive to be. As change leaders, the business analyst role is not just about translating tech jargon into business speak; it’s demonstrating the robust capabilities of JDE, pioneering new ideas and advocating for the benefit to the business. Andrew’s perspective was a powerful reminder that within the JDE platform, we often have the solutions we need; there’s not always a necessity to look outside or overcomplicate with third-party solutions. #truth

Paul and Andrew then delved into tactics for fostering end-user buy-in, emphasizing the unique challenge of shifting mindsets from indifference to engagement. Andrew’s strategy… a mix of self-deprecating humor and relatable conversations to lower defenses to build rapport. This approach not only humanizes the interaction but sets the stage for more meaningful engagement on project objectives and solutions.

Chandra and Andrew shared insights on the vital role of Quest’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in their transition from non-techncial backgrounds where every detail mattered, and things were very process driven to one where outcomes are paramount. Andrew’s journey from “recovering accountant” to a pivotal role in IT, directly benefited from his Quest community engagement. Through the SIGs, members share challenges, solutions, and triumphs, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.

Andrew’s parting advice was simple yet profound: never be afraid to ask questions and admit when you don’t know something. This ethos, coupled with a relentless curiosity and the willingness to explore, is what propels individuals and organizations forward.

Welp, as we wrap up this series, remember whether you are a JDE veteran or new to the scene, remember it’s all about the people, pull tabs and the meat raffles. So, keep your conversations warm and your farewells longer than expected as any good Midwesterner does! Until next time, keep leading change, asking questions, and connecting with the incredible community around you.
