We are faced with database migrations very often and have to deal with a variety of issues like data types compatibility, version issues, database size and restrictions regarding downtime, performance on the new platforms, special requirements associated with the application to name just a few. A database migration if well planned and executed can be very smooth and seamless and we can even have a value add of – increased performance on the destination platform or can end up with an excruciatingly long and tedious process plagued with errors and failures – in short a nightmare. After having managed many migrations from variety of database technologies, one does assemble a few main tasks to focus on and tips and tricks which will ensure a smooth migration. Using a couple of use cases from federal space I would like to highlight some methodologies that I have followed to create a repeatable process for Sybase to Oracle migration.
