Bulletproof Your Data Guard Configuration 12.1c/18c/19c

Learn how you can setup Data Guard with all the best practices. Attendees will get a brief history of Data Guard and how it became Data Guard. Then we will dive directly into new features in Oracle Data Guard 12c Release 2/18c/19c new features. In addition to demonstrating how simple it is to set up Data Guard, this session will disseminate fundamental Data Guard best practices and reference architectures that DBAs need to know to protect their Oracle ecosystem. The author of the Oracle Data Guard Handbook will demonstrate how DBAs should setup, configure, and monitor mission-critical Data Guard environments (including Active Data Guard).
Come see Data Guard best practices in action. The session concentrates on:

  • Building the Physical Standby
  • Monitoring and Maintaining the Physical Standby
  • Configuring Data Guard Broker
  • Performing Backup and Recovery with RMAN
  • Setting Archive Retention
  • Switchover with Refreshable PDBs
  • Subset Standbys with PDBs

Oracle Advanced security features in combination with our in-house best practice to safeguard databases for SaaS Applications

In this era, data privacy and security is a major concern. It is a challenge to be compliant with the standards as far as data security is concerned. Oracle Advanced Security options provide us easy ways to protect our databases and be compliant at the same time. This session will give an overview and use cases of several impactful Oracle Advanced Security features we have been using for our SaaS applications in real life production systems. In addition to that, there are several other in-house best practice we have developed over the years which might be beneficial for others.

Objectives:
1: A review of all advanced security features available for Oracle Database
2: Use cases to cover with those security features and gear towards compliance
3: Other in-house best practice developed over the years with the data security in mind

Compute Cloud Performance Showdown – 18 Months Later

In January 2019, our team published results of performance tests conducted against leading compute cloud providers that included Amazon Web Services, Oracle Cloud, IBM Cloud, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. Host, application, and database performance were compared. Nothing alarming in the results were found; more powerful CPUs yielded better performance with the exception of Azure which generally underperformed. However, other non-performance related factors were found to affect the overall experience and cloud selection recommendations. Now, 18 months later, we have ran the same series of tests against the same providers. In this presentation, we compare how each cloud provider has evolved in the past year and a half and share our findings and observations. Results are somewhat unexpected this round.

Data for Nothing, Get Your Cloud for Free (I Want My Oracle Cloud)

At Oracle Open World 2019, Oracle announced an Always Free Tier of cloud services. This session will review what’s available with these free cloud services such as Oracle autonomous databases including Autonomous Data Warehouse (ADW) and Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP), compute with up to 2 virtual machines, storage including block, object, and archive storage. We’ll explore how these free services work and what can be done with them, such as creating proof of concept systems. Looking for data? No problem! We’ll explore the vast number of free data sources that are available and can be consumed using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Once we combine the two, we can easily pull data into these cloud services while creating fully functioning applications including the use of Oracle Application Express (APEX).

Objective 1: Review the Oracle Always Free Tier of cloud services.
Objective 2: Describe the available data source APIs that you can get for nothing.

Using Graph Analytics for New Insights

The interesting thing about a graph is that we can use it with almost every application. We can view most data sets as a graph, and that gives you the ability to see your data through the connections and relationships between data entities. Once you represent your data as a graph, you can apply graph algorithms to get new insights into your data. In this session, I will discuss how you can create a graph from relational tables in Oracle Autonomous Database, apply graph algorithms to this graph, and use the results in your applications. My goal is to demystify graph analytics and help you get started using graphs in your analytics applications.

Oracle APEX: From Idea to Application at the Speed of Light

The need for immediate applications to manage information has never been greater. Within the past year, countless organizations around the world had unanticipated requirements thrust upon them. Those organizations skilled in Low Code development platforms delivered solutions far faster than their traditional coding counterparts. Learn what their advantage was. This session will be a live demonstration of Oracle Application Express (APEX), the low code development platform from Oracle. In a matter of minutes, we will go from concept to data model to prototype to refined application. We’ll also convert a spreadsheet to a multi-user Web application. Two applications in under 45 minutes. Fasten your seat belt!

Managing Unstructured Data: LOBs in the World of JSON (New Features and Getting There / Accelerating the database)

One of the most critical aspects of building effective systems is the successful management of unstructured/semi-structured information. The database is no longer only a place to store dollars and cents for the purposes of accounting. Efficient manipulation of JSON has become one of the most critical elements of contemporary database infrastructure. Even though you can store JSON documents in VARCHAR2 columns, in reality you will quickly outgrow VARCHAR2 size limitations and will have to switch to LOBs for storage. However, few people in the development community really understand the underlying mechanics of Oracle LOB datatypes and consider it yet another DBA issue. This presentation attempts to fill that knowledge gap.
