2026 DB&T Oracle Database October Meet-Up

From Runbook to Playbook: Automating Oracle Database Lifecycle with Ansible and Terraform
Much of a DBA’s work repeats on every server: preparing the OS, installing database software, creating and configuring databases, and patching and upgrading them. When DBAs do these steps by hand, they are slow, drift from server to server, and cause many production incidents. Small differences in paths, settings, and steps add up.
This session shows how to replace manual DBA runbooks with repeatable, version-controlled automation, using two widely adopted DevOps tools. We start with a quick comparison of the main options (Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Puppet, Chef, Salt) and why agentless tools suit DBA teams and consultants so well. Then we go into real examples. You’ll see an Ansible role that silently installs Oracle Database software across multiple servers, plus a three-phase upgrade playbook (pre-upgrade, upgrade, and finalize) that builds in backups and guaranteed restore points. We’ll also cover the OCI Ansible collection for provisioning compute and Autonomous Database, and Terraform for infrastructure as code on OCI, including variables, outputs, data sources, and a sensible project layout.
Attendees will leave with a practical blueprint and sample code they can adapt immediately to their own environments.
