How to Manage Your Application Testing

Shelby Klingerman, Content Curator|

When you are testing your applications, there are four major components that you need to consider. You need to understand your people, process, technology and data and the interdependency between them all. These four components must work together to create one successful system. Here’s a breakdown of each of the components:

People

The purpose of testing applications is to see if they will yield expected results. It is important to gather a team of people to help with testing who can trust each other, stay positive and ask the right types of questions. People on your team who are involved in testing should be trained in the application and/or the business process, and if they’re not, you need to train them. If they’re not knowledgeable about the application or process, your testing results will likely be inconsistent.

Process

Testing is a process with many steps to take. You’ll need to develop a Test Strategy document during the planning phase, come up with a Test Plan that defines all of the testing activities based on the Test Strategy, define a process that your company uses to complete testing, and then take on the testing itself.

Technology

There is a long list of the different types of testing that you can do with your technology. It’s important to complete Unit Testing, Application Testing, System Integration Testing, User Acceptance Testing, Security Testing, Performance Testing and Parallel Testing. You need to go through the multiple phases of testing to ensure that your application is working properly and will go over smoothly when it goes live.

Data

Data is not only about your scripts and your test data. It encompasses much more important information like the overall results expected from testing, a risk summary, aging, open tickets, SLA and the time it takes to fix, a defect summary and a root cause analysis.
