As part of Quest Experience Week (QXW) 2019, Oracle’s Dan Koloski, Vice President of Product Management for Enterprise and Cloud Manageability, and Courtney Llamas, Strategic Customer Program for Enterprise and Cloud Manageability, spoke about Enterprise and Cloud Manageability strategies, roadmap highlights, and the customer and partner ecosystem.
It is important to note that the enterprise cloud journey is progressing faster than your systems management maturity. Your management practices are optimized for traditional IT, which focuses on on-premise deployments. Your IT estate actually looks like a hybrid IT, which is a mix of on-premises and cloud deployments. For an end result, your company wants it to look like cloud IT, which focuses on heterogeneous cloud services.
Next-generation systems management includes hybrid IT management, smart insights, and hyper-extensibility. Hybrid IT management requires you to administer software seamlessly across on-premises and cloud with a single pane of glass. Smart insights require the use of machine learning and analytics to anticipate problems and intervene before they occur. Hyper-extensibility requires you to extend and integrate your management regime to new target types and tools.
One key piece of the enterprise and cloud management strategy is to provide maximum customer choice through innovations in both cloud and on-premises manageability offerings.

Fleet-Wide Management of Hybrid Estate
With fleet-wide management of the hybrid estate, it is important to both monitor and manage your hybrid fleet and hybrid database-as-a-service (DBaaS). When managing and monitoring your hybrid fleet, new cloud-aware target types, enterprise-wide fleet dashboard, and lifecycle management of cloud targets will all prove to be vital components. The new cloud-aware target types are for autonomous and cloud DBs, including Exadata Cloud. Enterprise-wide fleet dashboards are for finding “hot spots” and lifecycle management of cloud targets is used via cloud-native APIs. Hybrid DBaaS includes self-service deployment and self-service governance. Self-service deployment is across on-premises and Oracle Cloud. Self-service governance contains tools for effective cloud resource utilization and configuration control.
Enterprise Manager in Oracle Cloud Marketplace
Last spring, Oracle added an Enterprise Manager app in Oracle Cloud Marketplace. This provides users with one-click (or a few clicks) provisioning of an EM environment. You can test-drive the most current EM and have full install in less than one hour. The current version, out since July 2019, includes:
- Enterprise Manager 13.3PG BP3
- Database 19.3 for Oracle Management Repository
- Oracle Linux 7.6 host
Users can deploy best-practice production EMs by leveraging the many OCI Shapes for different environment sizes, HA and MAA (multi-host) EM configurations, and Cloud Database for OMR.
Autonomous Database Management
There are five primary capabilities for an autonomous database:
- Moving
- Monitoring
- Managing
- Diagnosing
- Analyzing
You can adopt the cloud with confidence and optimize customer-managed components. Guided migrations can be made from on-premises to Oracle Cloud using automated workflows. Utilization can be used for optimal workload placement. You can monitor with automatic anomaly detection and manage users, schema, roles, and spaces. You can also diagnose and improve application-level SQL logic. Finally, lifecycle operations like service instantiation, termination, scale-up/down can be orchestrated via cloud-native APIs.
Smart Insights from Exadata Warehouse
Smart Insights from Exadata Warehouse enable you to proactively optimize Exadata utilization through Enterprise Manager and drive consolidation onto ExaCS, ExaCC, and Autonomous Databases. The warehouse stores very fine-grained Exadata storage, cell and host data, along with AWR DB performance data. Forecasting algorithms identify resource issues and retention of analytic results can be used in BI tools. To drive consolidation, there is integrated capacity planning for both on-premises and cloud-based Exadata.
New Mobile App for Incident Management
The new mobile application for Incident Management allows you to know exactly what is going on anywhere and reduce mean-time-to-repair with better collaboration and efficiency. The Enterprise Summary shows the overall health and there are proactive mobile notifications on critical incidents. You are also able to access multiple EMs from your phone. In addition, you can take action on incidents and problems and the mobile share encourages team collaboration.
Grafana Plug-In for Enterprise Manager
The Grafana plug-in for Enterprise Manager allows you to quickly create EM dashboards and federate multiple EMs into a single view. You are able to perform out-of-the-box integration with EM schema, execute SQL via REST API, and sample EM dashboards are included to help you get started. In addition, you are easily able to pull data from multiple EM instances by reusing useful dashboards against new EMs. You are also able to combine EM and third-party data sources.
Oracle Management Cloud Roadmap

New Database Management Service
Database Management as a service provides countless benefits and features to consumers. The new cloud service for comprehensive management of DBs is deployed on-premises or on the cloud. The comprehensive dashboard provides a view of the entire enterprise estate, and there are holistic monitoring and diagnostics with the Performance Hub. You are provided with real-time SQL monitoring for runtime plan analysis. There is an administration of users, roles, PDBs, storage, configurations, and many more areas. There are also fleet-wide lifecycle operations such as patch automation, backups, and cloning.
Analytics and Machine Learning
The Analytics and Machine Learning for AIOps provide ongoing algorithmic optimizations and new out-of-box insights. Anomaly detection identifies abnormal behavior and clustering reveals patterns in large data sets. Correlation flags related symptoms and topologies and forecasting highlights tomorrow’s problems today. Additionally, “cluster compare” narrows down a root cause faster and application-specific and technology-specific dashboards allow non-experts to quickly troubleshoot complex systems.
Native Integration with Oracle Cloud
The native integration with Oracle Cloud provides enhanced security and a richer experience. Users will have unified access to monitoring and analytics services from OCI Console. Users will also experience deep integration with OCI artifacts including compartments and services. There is also an Integrated Security Model for managing roles, users and privileges. In addition, users will have global availability on Oracle Cloud data centers that are PCI, SOC 1, and SOC 2 compliant.
Integration with Enterprise Manager
OMC’s integration with Enterprise Manager simplifies onboarding for existing customers using automated collection of EM data and advanced analytics for EM targets. Data collector automates the discovery of targets from EM and there is an automatic ingestion of EM metadata. Exadata Analytics for EM-managed ExaCC and ExaCS aids in consolidation and troubleshooting. SQL Analytics for EM-managed databases focuses DBA effort by identifying unpredictable, slow and inefficient SQL.
