Personalizing Redwood Pages using Business Rules and Express Mode

The Business Rules framework affects the end user. You can write tailored conditional rules. An example of this is hiding the “age” field for US employees. Personalization opportunities include showing a hidden field or hiding a displayed field, making fields “required” or “read-only,” and showing or hiding components. These tailored conditional rules are especially helpful for security and compliance reasons, such as hiding employee data fields that are not allowed to be collected according to specific country regulations.

Defaulting and validations can also be added based on your own logic. Examples includes defaulting or validating salary based on job FLSA status, hourly paid/salaried and location, and disallowing special characters in addresses and names.

Oracle can also automate policy compliance. Examples include employee transfers that can only happen on the 1st or 16th of the month or prohibiting managers from reducing salaries.

Express Mode is an easier UI for the functional administrator to make changes. It’s a tailored, seamless experience for your employees. Express Mode offers:

Agility

  • Leverage delivered best practices or create your own rules based on various criteria such as country, business unit, or other
  • Make fields and regions required or optional, read-only or editable, and show or hide fields and regions depending on the specific user or role

Intuitive UI for Increased Productivity

  • Access directly from the page
  • Data visualization
  • Filter and deactivate rules in a single click

Comprehensive Solution

  • Identify fields and regions affected by a rule at a glance
  • Focus on work without worrying about saving
  • Explicitly list rules that apply to each region or field
  • Instantly test page personalization

Express Mode Key Components

There are a few key components Oracle refers to often in regards to VB Express. As mentioned, Express Mode is a simplified way to make changes. It eliminates the need for a sandbox. Page Properties are constants which can control page behavior such as guided journeys, hiding, or reordering tabs. Business Rules control the display of regions and fields on a Redwood page.

Use Cases for Business Rules in Express Mode

Defaulting Full Time or Part Time Field & Proposed Salary Basis Based on Working Hours

In the use case displayed below, if working hours are less than 40, then the proposed salary basis is hourly. If working hours equal 40, then the proposed salary basis is annual.

Business Rules Express Mode brings new capabilities to complete the set of personalization tools. You can default field values based on static value, a list of values, or another field value. You can also nest rules and build simple to complex conditions. You can add a condition based on a field and direct attributes available in the page. Finally, you can use Advanced Expression to author the rule logic.

Validate Proposed Salary Basis Frequency Based on Full Time or Part Time

In the example above, the rule validates or invalidates an action taken by a manager to change the salary of an employee.  The manager can receive an error message with assigned severity. The user could build additional rules to nest with this one.
