Deep Dive into SQL Tuning

Presented by Gary Gordhamer, Viscosity North America

Have you had that one SQL statement that you just couldn’t figure out what the Oracle optimizer was thinking? In this session we will take a deep dive into doing a trace and talk about some of the sledgehammer methods to influence the optimizer. You may not find the solution to that one nagging SQL but we will cover how the optimizer frustrated you so. Using these tools along with Oracle’s SQL Plan Management or Profiles you may be able to achieve your goals. Many developers do not understand how to dig into SQL beyond the basic explain plan. Here we will cover the somewhat gory details of going deep inside how the optimizer is making decisions.
1. What tools are available for deep diving into a SQL statement?
2. When would you use each of these tools, and how do you understand the output?
3. What are some of the ways to force the optimizer to behave the way I want it to?

Machine Learning for Business Leadership

Presented by Rich Niemiec, Viscosity North America

This presentation will focus on what specific algorithms inside Oracle can be applied to business problems. Robots may be the first to truly learn machine learning (ML) and expand into artificial intelligence (AI). Python is one of the keys to machine learning as we program the invention of the mind to further replace humans’ most basic tasks. This session will focus on ML 101 and building the future ahead. Some business issues are seasonal, some relate to customers with certain attributes, and some relate to customers we don’t know exist, but all can be solved by using the correct algorithm to quickly prescribe a better corporate future.

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET

Oracle Database Authentication – a deep dive into the first step in securing your database

Presented by Russ Lowenthal, Oracle

Oracle Database accepts several different authentication methods – each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Join us to review database authentication, appropriate use cases, and how you can use authentication methods to reduce risk and improve security.

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET

On-Demand Database Management

Presented by Steven Lemme, Oracle & Sriram Vrinda, Oracle

DevOps doesn’t need nor would they use all the functionality Enterprise Manager has to offer. Yet, DevOps is often called upon to perform some database management tasks for Oracle Databases (Standard and Enterprise Edition) in the Oracle Cloud or on other vendors clouds. So, it makes sense for them to use a solution that can complement and take advantage of EM, whether or not it’s already in use within the business. To address evolving database management needs, Oracle now also provides the Oracle Cloud based Database Management Service. Attend this session to learn how this cloud-based service enables the user to perform database management activities within minutes of subscription to perform a variety of on-demand work when needed whether databases are on-premises or in the cloud.

Managing the Earthquake: Surviving Major Database Architecture Changes

Presented by Michael Rosenblum, Dulcian, Inc

Every long-term IT project reaches a point when one or more fundamental concepts that define the whole system are no longer true. If the business is lucky, this may lead to a brand new development project. If not, the current system must be altered to support requirements for which it was never designed. This presentation discusses how to mitigate possible design-time risks using available technologies and concepts from a database perspective, such as repository-based solutions, code generators, abstract models, micro-SOA, etc. The presentation will also cover real-life examples of best practices for handling unexpected architectural shifts based on systems with 10+ years of life span.

• Attendees will see how proper architectural foundations pay off during later stages of projects.
• The audience will learn importance of utilization of contemporary development best practices.
• Attendees will understand the importance of thinking past V0 (contrary to the contemporary development style!)

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM ET

Avoid risk, seize reward: how do you navigate rapidly changing Oracle landscapes?

Presented by Graham Thornton, Dell Technologies

The business data landscape is changing as never before. First off, there’s more data to process—from more sources—while leadership demands ever faster and more precise results. At the same time, malicious attacks—with the potential to inflict lengthy and costly outages—are on the rise. Add to this, the fact that infrastructure itself is transforming, with much data processing moving to cloud and edge environments. Nonetheless, Oracle remains the world’s number-one relational database technology, critical to countless organizations’ day-to-day operations. Which begs the question: how does this evolving data frontier affect Oracle investments, and how do we capitalize on the opportunities while minimizing the risks?

From this session, attendees should be able to:
• Recognize the optimal infrastructure for Oracle database technologies within their own organizations
• Enumerate and quantify primary risks to their existing Oracle database assets
• Plan short, medium, and even long-term strategies for navigating the changing business data landscape

Keep Your Code Low, Low, Low, Low, Low: Getting to Digitally Driven With Oracle Converged Database

Presented by Jim Czuprynski, Zero Defect Computing

In the brave new digitally-driven world, IT organizations can no longer focus on internal-only RDBMS databases as the central pillar of their infrastructure; data must be accessed externally as well, regardless of format or location, with utmost security. Fortunately, Oracle’s Converged Database strategy makes it simple to satisfy these demands. This session explores the myriad facets of a Converged Database strategy and what it means for your career’s future path, regardless of whether you’re an application developer or DBA.

Through presentations and online demonstrations, this session illustrates how to:
• Leverage the strategy behind Converged Database to help your IT shop become truly digitally driven
• Access data in any format virtually anywhere with utmost security using Oracle’s EXTERNAL table methodology
• Take advantage of Oracle APEX application features like Web Source Modules and Plug-Ins to build robust applications without deep knowledge of JavaScript

The attendee will understand:

Automating the Machine Learning Modeling Process

Presented by Mark Hornick, Oracle

Using data to gain insights, make predictions, and identify patterns has become a priority for most enterprises. Machine learning is a key technology, but it often requires specific skill sets to take advantage of. Even for experts, the machine learning process can be highly iterative and involve significant trial and error. To help make machine learning more accessible to a broader set of users and enhance data scientist productivity, Oracle introduced automated machine learning, or AutoML, both from a Python API and a no-code user interface. In this session we introduce the machine learning process and how AutoML plays a key role in the modeling process. We’ll include a demonstration of the no-code OML AutoML UI and the OML4Py AutoML features.
