Hindsight is 20-20: The Journey from Project Implementation Plan to Replicable Implementation Model

Sonoma County decided to replace an aging (1985) mainframe accounting system and dozens of shadow systems with an integrated enterprise solution in 2012.  The decision to implement PeopleSoft Financials came at a time when The County had sufficiently recovered from the financial impacts of the Great Recession. The Accounting Manager tapped to lead the effort assembled a team of accountants and a buyer.  Several resources from Sonoma County’s Information Services Department were recruited to support the effort.  No one had PeopleSoft experience or experience implementing an integrated ERP system.  A PeopleSoft Project Management team was awarded the implementation contract. An independent Project Manager was hired to represent the County’s interests.  Three project managers – what could go wrong?  Over 18 months, we navigated a bumpy road from requirements to go-live.  Five years later we built an implementation model for annual PeopleSoft updates and most recently annual enhancements.
