100910 Surprising Insights into a Green Fields Implementation

Presented at INFOCUS 19

Conventional thought has always been that green fields implementations are the best type of project to do. You have a “blank page” on which to design a new system. Our implementation taught me otherwise.

Cobre Panama is a massive Copper Mining complex that we have built in the Panamanian rain forest. It is a remote, multi-cultural, multi-discipline, multi-language environment. Working conditions are tough, work schedules are challenging, and it was often hard to find a common language in the project. Traveling to and from the site is challenging due to its remoteness. I would like to share some of my insights and learnings from this project, and offer some suggestions or solutions to the challenges that we encountered.
