AI is Cool. But is it relevant to my business? Probably, and here is how.

Presented by:
George Danner at Business Laboratory LLC

Abstract:

AI is the most talked-about subject among business leaders today, getting top billing at places like the World Economic Forum in Davos. There is a general feeling that AI advances in the last two years are important, perhaps even groundbreaking, but most firms struggle with the relevance of AI to their own businesses. AI seems like a far away dream, not a practical technology that companies large and small can exploit today.
History has taught us that waiting for the “right moment” to jump onto a technology platform is a fool’s errand at best. Alternatively, the smart money seeks to understand the technology and the various ways to experiment with its use, in low-risk fashion, along the company’s value chain.
We have been applying AI for 25 years, long before it was cool. We’ve made many, many mistakes. We’ve discovered some surprising truths. Along the way we’ve learned a great deal about AI and its practical applications that almost any business can embrace. Yes, AI is powerful, and applied thoughtfully it can propel many businesses to a level of efficiency and value creation that is unmatched by its AI-challenged competitors. But just like any powerful force, it must be managed carefully.
In our talk we will be reaching out to practically-oriented business leaders and technologists who are intrigued by the headlines, but are at a loss as to how (and where, and how much) to start with AI. We will offer a few methodical and systematic steps to get to a smarter, 2.0 version of the company that you are today.

Algorithmic Business Thinking & Machine Learning

Presented by:
Rich Niemiec at Viscosity North America

Abstract:

Using Oracle Machine Learning: I’ll show how to produce results quickly. The first step is Algorithmic Business Thinking to see where the biggest impact will be for the business. Next: applying the correct algorithm and understanding different settings will be important. Then: training the model with either data that you have or data via Big Data opportunities will be key to teach a model. After all of that: you can then test your model against data that you understand well already to see if this is the best model or if a different algorithm might be better. Lastly: testing the model on NEW data that starts to prescribe what to do in the future. Understanding which customers or potential customers are likely to buy. Finding anomalies quicker to address as needed. Knowing which product is the NEXT product a customer will buy. Finding the attributes of great customers that you have within new customers that are opportunities & you’ll know what they want to buy first or second. This is an intermediate look at the practical application of Machine Learning.

Future Ready: Preparing for the Age of AI

Presented by:
George Danner at Business Laboratory LLC

Abstract:

It is an exciting time. It is a terrifying time. Technology seems to be moving faster than anyone could have imagined, upending industry after industry, but providing tremendous opportunities in its wake at the same time.
This all leaves us wondering… what can we do to be Future Ready given these new and uncertain times brought about by potent technologies like AI?
You might be surprised to know that this is hardly the first time that society has been confronted with massive upheavals due to the introduction of the sweeping technology of the day. Who can forget the violent riots in the late 1700s as the Industrial Revolution was taking hold? In this talk, we will look carefully at several periods of history and the lessons they taught us as to how to prepare to thrive in a world that includes AI-borne superpowers. History is the finest of teachers.
We will then shift over to a more modern take on what is going on today. Here again we look at people and companies that can teach us more about what the future holds. Tesla, Apple, SpaceX, and Amazon are remarkable firms with charismatic founders, but what lessons do those companies hold for the average businessperson looking to make a difference going forward? We believe that we have uncovered some crucial features of modern-day firms that will propel them long into the future, along with other firms that adopt their practices.
Beyond companies in business, how can individuals become Future Ready? Our conversation will inevitably lead to the steps that people can follow to prepare for the coming wave of technological progression. We will offer tips and tricks to help you get ahead and stay ahead of the rapid advances. Some of this advice is rather counterintuitive, some of this will be hard work. All of it will cause you to stretch your mind in ways that you would not have done naturally.
Join us as we take a walking tour of the future through the lens of the past.

The DNA of Disruption: Why Future-Ready Teams Need Future-Ready Skills

Presented by:
Will Markow at Lightcast

Abstract:

If the events of recent years have taught us anything, it is that the only constant is change. Whether this change is driven by a global pandemic, an evolving regulatory landscape, or new technological breakthroughs, all organizations must be prepared to navigate a continuously shifting business climate. Increasingly, they must also navigate these changes with fewer people, as a perfect storm of demographic headwinds threatens to cause long-term talent shortages. These challenges will require teams to constantly evolve, and this evolution starts with the skills of their workforce.
In this discussion Will Markow, Vice President of Applied Research at Lightcast, will discuss emerging drivers of workforce disruption, and examine the skills your team needs to remain future-ready, even in a talent scarce environment. This session will highlight key workforce trends from Lightcast’s research and explore steps that organizations take to build a workforce with the skills needed to not only survive but thrive in an age of constant change.

Future-Proofing Your Cybersecurity Workforce

Presented by:
Will Markow at Lightcast

Abstract:

Security teams are facing a perfect storm of disruption. New technologies constantly expand attack surfaces and add complexity to an organization’s IT infrastructure, emerging threats increase the range of protective measures organizations must employ, and shifting regulatory requirements introduce new compliance challenges. Compounding these issues, many IT security teams are already woefully understaffed: in the U.S., we only have 72 cybersecurity workers for every 100 workers that employers demand. Taken together, these factors make cybersecurity jobs some of the most rapidly evolving in the entire economy – and some of the most difficult to future-proof.
In this discussion, Will Markow, Vice President of Applied Research at Lightcast, will discuss how organizations can stay one step ahead of these challenges and maintain a future-ready cybersecurity workforce. We will discuss the market trends that are causing cybersecurity skill requirements to evolve and consider how IT leaders can spot the emerging cybersecurity workforce needs they should prioritize. We will also discuss the implications for how we hire, train, and retain our cybersecurity teams with the goal of ensuring that we are continuously evolving our cybersecurity workers to meet the challenges of an uncertain future.

Assisting Employee as They Transfer Positions or Jobs Within the University Through Custom Journeys

Presented by:

Abstract:

Oracle journeys allow organizations to build in-system support from changing business needs to help employees transition to different phase of the employee life cycle. One important phase of the life cycle is understanding how to handle and support employees moving from one department or area to another. By creating three separate journeys to assist with employees transferring across the university: Baylor University has decreased its reliance on out-of-system processes to alleviate pain points around expenses during these transitions in the employee life cycle. To ensure we reach all transferring employees: Baylor created a fast formula in the transfer journey that triggers only for those accepted offers with a transfer action: in addition to utilizing the other action types.During this session: Baylor University will explain how we use three different journeys for transferring employees across the university to ensure expense and outstanding items are closed following the employee’s transition into a new area of the organization.

“Everyone is Doing It” and Other Bad Reasons for Cloud Moves

Presented by:
Paul Taylor at Gideon Taylor

Abstract:

When starting a digital transformation: it is best to know why you’re doing it. Is moving to the Cloud a means to an end: or an end in itself? Are you trying to impact the bottom line: improve the user experience: or both? As the industry learns real-world lessons about re-platforming in the Cloud era: you’d better have your priorities straight. This session will take a hopefully sober: and likely sobering look at how a SaaS project affects users and finances. Moving to the cloud will definitely change user experience and functionality – probably in both positive and negative ways. Cloud moves always change cost structures – but don’t automatically reduce cost. Your priorities should dictate the timing of your Cloud move: and well-informed decisions may contradict herd mentality. You may find it worthwhile to invest in dramatically improving your PeopleSoft user experience today while you are preparing for your Cloud move. Sorry if we’re the first to tell you this: but SaaS won’t magically make everything better. Warning: Sacred cows (and conventional wisdom) are not safe in this session! We will question the consensus meaning of “digital transformation” and propose a more challenging definition; we’ll take a clear-eyed look at the negative impacts you can expect from a SaaS move: and steps you can take to mitigate them. You might end up wanting to rethink your whole enterprise project calendar. What: did you think this was going to be easy?

NEW for Release 24: JD Edward’s EnterpriseOne Planned Component Replacements and Component Rebuilds Module

Presented by:
Scott Hollowell at Asset Management Solutions

Abstract:

Whether you manage a fleet of dozers and haul trucks, or a production facility with pumps and motors, you face the same challenges within JD Edwards Capital Asset Management (CAM); How to you track when major components are due for replacement?
How do you handle the rebuilding of components and track the cost of the rebuilt spare?
How do you track the history of how many times a component has been rebuilt and retire it when it is “used up?”
How do you prepare next year’s budget for major component replacements?
The NEW Planned Component Replacement (PCR) module for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne was designed with these questions in mind. PCR is an EnterpriseOne native module designed to coordinate actions and master-data updates between the CAM Maintenance user, Procurement, Inventory and Accounting.
With PCR you now have the ability to define and track rotable / rebuildable spare components and perform Fit /De-Fit actions to replace them when the time is due. The PCR Dashboard gives you full visibility to all the components in your fleet or plant and allows you to track components that are in service, out for rebuild, and available spares.
Join us for the debut of this exciting new module for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne.

Using Orchestrations to Integrate your Enterprise (JDE) to your Operations Execution Systems

Presented by:
Andrew Coutts & Scott Hollowell at Asset Management Solutions

Abstract:

Your challenge… JD Edwards EnterpriseOne is the “business system of record” yet many of the software solutions you use to manage your Operations and Maintenance activities are like islands unto themselves. Everyone wants integration between the systems that run day-to-day operations and the EnterpriseOne ERP that runs the business, but the scary shadows of the hard-coded interfaces of the 1990’s still linger…
JD Edwards Orchestrator, and the industry standardization of RESTful endpoint API’s, are changing this dynamic forever. No more SOAP and similar hard-coded interfaces, now your EnterpriseOne system can truly become your “system of record” by deployment of bi-directional Orchestrations, effectively “building bridges” between your ERP “Mainland” and your OpEx “islands.”
Objective 1:
Demonstrate the integration of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne maintenance Equipment and Work Orders with Graphical Parts Catalogs to facilitate visibility of OEM Repair Manuals and Parts Books with JDE Procurement, Inventory, and Maintenance (CAM). JDE Orchestrations call relevant parts manuals and allow the return of shopping carts of Stock and Non-stocked parts.
Objective 2:
Demonstrate the integration of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Asset and Work Order modules to ESRI ArcGIS for display of JD Edwards Work Order data in the Geospatial layers of your Geographic Information System (GIS). JDE Orchestrations update GIS Layers with real-time data captured in JD Edwards Asset and WO systems.
Objective 3:
Demonstrate the integration of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne to Asset Performance Management (APM) solutions such as Aveva Pi for monitoring of operational performance such as Flow, Temperature, and Failures. JDE Orchestrations facilitate integration of conditional events such as equipment failures, triggering Work Orders and Alerts in JD Edwards.

Presented by:
Ed Howell & Alysa Mauer at M.D.C. Holdings, Inc.

Abstract:

MDC Holdings is one of the top homebuilders in the United States. Since going live with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne in 2010: they had accumulated mass amounts of data and needed a way to archive financial records and purchase orders. MDC chose to use Essentio’s Archivist tool to build a custom solution to archive records based on their Homebuilder data. Join this session to learn about Archivist and how MDC has benefited from the partnership with Essentio. MDC will share their process to determine what tables needed to be archived: how they develop custom archive rules based on Community close date using Essentio’s Archivist Software: changed selected E1 reports to pull from Production and Archive databases: and improved year-end rollover based on data reduction.MDC had accumulated excessive older data that was slowing down the close process: queries: reports and back-ups. Additionally: F0902 records were rolling over every year causing increased growth for inactive accounts. MDC undertook an archive project to remove excess data and improve performance.

Our team was entrusted with the crucial task of not only stabilizing this environment but also upgrading it to JDE 9.2. This extensive process took several years to complete: with the upgrade being finalized in January 2021. The deliberate strategic choices made during this journey: including the minimization of changes and the elimination of customizations: have been pivotal in our ability to consistently execute a code current project each year over the past several years.

How Morgan Olson Customers Rely on JD Edwards Data and Processes for Ordering Parts

Presented by:
Diego Fernandez & Jerry Van Dalen at SmarterCommerce

Abstract:

For Morgan Olson Parts (MOP): providing customers 24/7 access to a catalog of 8500+ replacement parts for their installed base of Morgan Olson walk-in step vans is critical to keep their customers’ (e.g. UPS: FedEx) fleet on the road and delivering. However: to deliver accurate replacement part information requires complete traceability for each manufactured step van and its often customer-specific specifications. With JD Edwards: MOP is able to track a unit’s manufactured bill of materials to the end vehicle identification number (VIN) and to properly tag serviceable parts for future replacement. Building on this ERP foundation: MOP set out to digitally transform their parts ordering process by implementing an ecommerce webstore (www.morganolsonparts.com). The combined webstore and JD Edwards solution provides customers with VIN search capabilities to view available parts by van assembly so they can pinpoint the exact part required for the van repair. In addition: MOP has provided customers access to view visual parts diagrams: place orders: manage accounts and retrieve service related documents on a 24/7 basis over the web with real-time pricing: inventory: and account specific information.

NEW for EnterpriseOne Release 24: Contractor Services Procurement Module Solves 3-Way Match Headache for Services Receipts

Presented by:
Scott Hollowell at Asset Management Solutions

Abstract:

A common challenge for companies trying to manage their Procure-to-Pay business process is encountered when trying to implement the segregation of duties & other controls mandated for Sarbanes-Oxley and Audit compliance to achieve a true “3-way” match.
Whereas materials & parts procurement have JDE applications that easily support the 3-way match of Purchase Order – Receipt – Payment Voucher, companies procuring Services from Contractors are frequently faced with the dilemma of how to perform a Receipt of Services? All too often, companies arrive at a hodge-podge of processes and JDE usage, ranging from flip-flopping the quantity and extended price fields on the PO, forwarding invoices via mail to the original requestor of services procurement for a “manual approval to pay,” and external software systems managing “A/P approvers.”
The NEW Contractor Services Procurement Module for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne was designed with these challenges in mind, and managing Contractor Services procurement has never been easier.
Join us and see how this JD Edwards EnterpriseOne native module allows your company to overcome the challenges that plague your Procurement, Operations, and Accounts Payables groups.

Better than SQL: Using JDE Orchestrations to Accelerate Hypercare Issue Resolution

Presented by:
Ocie Anderson, Abhijit Bhishikar, Biswadeep Rath, & Amit Angane at N/A

Abstract:

Real Life Scenario: During the Hypercare phase of a JDE deployment: a priority ticket led to the discovery of certain critical fields and tables that required a mass upload of data: as well as mass update of existing records. Absence of standard mass upload programs and presence of a dynamic UKID field in the live environment further complicated possible resolution approaches. JDE Orchestrator Based resolution: During this presentation we will explore how an orchestrator solution was quickly developed: with the capability to perform a mass update of records into the required tables: by using standard JDE Interactive forms: reducing the projected fix from days to a matter of seconds. Using an orchestrator also maintained the integrity of relevant data and the UKID fields. We will review how the orchestration was developed: the elements of the orchestration: the data provided by the client: and the testing procedure to execute the correction: and discuss how this solution was superior to often-used SQL updates. Lastly: we will use this example to facilitate a discussion on innovative ways to use orchestrations to solve implementation challenges.

The IL Wage Payment & Collection Act (IWPCA) amended regulations now require employers to maintain the following records for three years:- All policies regarding reimbursement;- All employee requests for reimbursement.- Documentation showing approval or denial of reimbursement; and- Documentation showing actual reimbursement and supporting documents. Our project made the necessary changes in the system to make sure we keep a record of an employee’s expense reports as required: including the ones returned by approvers. Previously: they are being automatically deleted if they have been inactive for 30 or more days. We also removed the ability for employees to delete their own expense reports to ensure we don’t lose record of them.Another audit item we needed to address was the requirement of an expenses supervisor approval for all paid expense reports. Previously: employees who do not have an expenses supervisor set up in HR: can attach a signed copy of their expense reports to the submission. When Accounts Payable approvers do not see an electronic expenses supervisor approval in place: they can check attachments to make sure it has a signed approval from the supervisor. This manual process sometimes results in expense reports getting approved without the required supervisor approval which is an audit red flag. The project made the electronic supervisor approval required for all expense report submissions which cut down the time and effort for our Accounts Payable and also resulted in faster turnaround for reimbursement requests.

Lessons in Juggling – Environment Management

Presented by:
Ryan Brokke at Evergy Inc.

Abstract:

Managing day to day operations in an ERP system can be challenging in its own right: but trying to keep up with the implementation of three new work management systems: a new business unit: an upgrade to an auxiliary financial management system: your own PUM & PeopleTools Upgrade: AND day to day operations in the same year is exhausting. In my session: I’ll be discussing how we managed to juggle all of that work across a handful of environments in order to hit multiple go-live dates across six months while also supporting production. I’ll start by reviewing our timelines and the conflicting factors in play across these efforts: some fire drills that caused re-planning: and run through diagrams capturing our strategy. I’ll wrap things up with a discussion on how we cleaned up our environments after the go-lives and lessons learned on how we’re moving forward with a better environment strategy. I also expect that I’d sprinkle in a few general lessons learned throughout this whole process as it all took place during my first year as the manager of application development in this space.

Fluid Requisitions Implementation

Presented by:
Samantha Kustra & Ramya Sivasubramanian at N/A

Abstract:

Oracle has slowly transitioned most of their user-facing transactions to fluid objects/pages as fluid objects are designed to render more consistently across devices. Additionally: Northwestern has transitioned all other user-facing transactions to Fluid Pages. In 2022: a Fluid Requisition Discovery project was done to identify configurations/customizations that would be necessary to support the purchasing business process at Northwestern. Discovery included development to bring over configs and customizations currently in place in the Classic pages: functional analysis as well as User Acceptance Testing. In January of 2023: Northwestern went live with Fluid Requisitions but kept Classic Requisitions available to ease the transition for users as well as work out any additional bugs not found during the discovery and implementation phases. Configurations/customizations that had to be developed in Fluid Requisitions included but weren’t limited to: Making Supplier required: Disabling Unused Menu Items: Custom Field Labels and Look-ups: Integration with Third Party Marketplace: Removed Ability for Users to Editing Supplier/Item Info on Catalog Requisitions.During the transition phase while both Classic and Fluid Requisitions are still available: the most substantial issue discovered in Fluid Reqs was that users were not able to resubmit a Denied Requisition. With Classic Requisitions: we had a workaround to edit price or quantity which would retrigger workflow. This workaround did not work in Fluid Requisitions for multi-line requisitions. Oracle provided a workaround for Fluid which included adding/editing the Justification Comments which then re-triggered workflow. To help make this apparent to users: we implemented a customization which requires Justification Comments for all denied fluid requisitions. Now that we believe that we’ve worked out any roadblocks for users: we plan to discontinue Classic Requisitions as the end of this calendar year.

Abstract:

SDCOE began a 5-year journey in 2016 to bring over 50 disparate schools district live on a single PeopleSoft environment (HCM & Finance). Leveraging a private cloud and common business processes, the district office of education set out with its implementation partner to implement PeopleSoft Financial, Procurement and HR/Payroll modules in a phased approach over a 5-year period. Remote Worker…The New Multi-State Tax Compliance Headache

Presented by:
Barbra Branyan & Tyger Vollrath at PS WebSolution, Inc.

Abstract:

In the past 10 years, working from home has become more and more common. When employees only worked in a few specific locations, it was easy to setup those locations in PeopleSoft with its core features (including its tax requirements) and maintain that location for all the employee’s that worked there. But in the new remote working world (especially with COVID), employees are now working most of their hours from home, which may be in other states and with new tax localities. State tax revenue offices have become more aware of this trend and have been more aggressive about getting those employees or employers to pony up any work location taxes in addition to any resident taxes the employee should be paying. But this can be a maintenance and compliance nightmare for a payroll and tax department. Especially for states like Pennsylvania which have work tax codes in the thousands. Ensuring that the correct codes are assigned to an employee’s work and resident location(s) is challenging but we’ll show you how.

Streamlining Testing Processes: Journey Towards Automation

Presented by:
Naveen Kumar Basavajappa at Accenture, LP
Chelsa Vinklarek at Black Hills Energy at Accenture, LP

Abstract:

Co-Presenter: Chelsa Vinklarek, State of Texas
Join us at the Quest Blueprint conference for an enlightening session by Texas CPA, where they will share their organization’s transformative journey towards automating their ERP testing process.
The organization faced significant challenges with managing manual test scripts and test evidence for their Centralized Accounting and Payroll/Personnel System. Testing required to support the application changes and dependent hub agencies for a highly customized ERP application is complex and needs extensive regression testing and significant test evidence documentation. Manual testing covered this requirement however it was time consuming, person dependent, inconsistent, and varied based on change and functionality, making it difficult for the QA team to validate and sign-off on testing results, leading to substantial rework.
The organization embarked on a transformative journey to automate testing scripts from 7+ years of manual testing. The business challenge revolved around creating a standard testing platform and evaluating thousands of test evidence and test cases for automation.
Attendees of this session will gain insights into the challenges faced by the organization, the approach taken to automate the testing process, and the benefits achieved through modern data-driven techniques. The speakers will share valuable lessons learned, best practices, and the overall impact of this automation journey on the organization’s confidence in their complex testing process.

Presented by:
Gary Dranikoski at SpearMC

Abstract:

PeopleSoft has always been a great transactional system: but the embedded reporting capabilities have typically fallen short in function: performance: visualization: and/or usability. With Kibana: hear how a customer now has a user-friendly option for analytical reporting and interactive dashboards within PeopleSoft. “The Road to Kibana” will take the audience on a journey from identifying a reporting need to building content then concluding with a dashboard that SpearMC has built to support our customers. Join this session to hear real-life examples of how customers like Memorial Hospital: Temple University and Parkview Health are leveraging Kibana. We will also cover two use cases that showcases tangible benefits to attendees. The purpose of this presentation is to educate PeopleSoft customers with the data visualization: dashboarding: and analytical capabilities now available with Kibana and PeopleTools 8.60. Specific focus for this session will cover the seamless migration from Elastic/Kibana to OpenSearch/Dashboards. The presenter is part of the Early Adopter Program for Kibana and OpenSearch. You will walk away with everything you need to know to migrate to the new Open Source standard. We will cover Oracle’s messaging that “Kibana is not going away”…in fact “the new search and reporting tool” is simply the same code line as Elastic and Kibana: and any effort put into Elastic/Kibana will translate and migrate seamlessly to OpenSearch/Dashboards.*This session is CPE Eligible.
