Hey JDE Connection listeners, Chandra and Paul here!

Every once in a while, we record an episode that feels just as relevant to our own lives as we hope it will be for yours. This was definitely one of those conversations. After chatting before the show about marathon training, product releases, conferences, deadlines, and the never-ending balancing act that seems to come with working in technology, it felt like the perfect time to invite career coach, trainer, and neuroscience enthusiast Cindy Edwards, owner of Find Your Fit, LLC, to join us for a discussion about stress, resilience, and why our brains don’t always cooperate when we’d like them to.

As it turns out, understanding stress has a lot less to do with simply “handling it” and a lot more to do with understanding ourselves.

Maybe We’re Asking the Wrong Question

The conversation naturally moved toward something we don’t spend enough time thinking about. Stress isn’t always just about having too much on our plates. Sometimes it’s about transition. Sometimes it’s uncertainty. Sometimes it’s the stories we’re telling ourselves at two in the morning when sleep has apparently decided to clock out early.

What we appreciated most was that Cindy never treated stress as a personal weakness. Instead, she helped us think about it as something our brains are constantly trying to interpret and respond to. Once you start looking at it that way, it becomes a little easier to understand why two people can experience the same situation very differently.

Your Brain Has a “Just Right” Setting

Cindy introduced us to the idea that our brains have a “just right” zone for focus and performance. Too much stimulation and we’re overwhelmed. Too little and suddenly that task we’ve been avoiding for three days somehow feels impossible to start.

We won’t spoil all of the science because Cindy explains it far better than we ever could, but let’s just say we both had several moments where we looked at each other and thought, “Well…that explains a few things.”

Sometimes the Best Stress Relief Is Already Around You

One of our favorite moments happened almost by accident. As we joked our way through the opening of the episode, Cindy pointed out something we hadn’t even noticed. We were laughing. We were talking. We were connecting. Those things matter.

It was a great reminder that resilience doesn’t always come from adding another productivity app, reading another book, or finding the perfect life hack. Sometimes it starts with simple conversations, genuine relationships, and allowing ourselves to enjoy the people around us.

Considering how often our podcast episodes begin with us teasing each other before diving into serious topics, we may have stumbled onto a stress management strategy without realizing it.

Midwesternism of the Day

This week we’re raising a glass to a cocktail that’s about as unapologetically Midwestern as it gets. It isn’t flashy, and it certainly isn’t trying to impress anyone, but it may pair well with “Midwestern Sushi”.

We hope you enjoyed this conversation with Cindy about understanding stress. We certainly walked away with plenty to reflect on. Until next time, let’s keep learning, sharing, and most importantly, laughing together.

Toodles!
