Hey JDE Connection listeners, Chandra and Paul here!

When we wrapped up our first conversation with Cindy Edwards, we knew we weren’t finished. There was still so much to unpack, especially when it came to the practical side of managing stress. We all know stress is part of life but understanding what’s actually happening inside our brains and having a few tools to work with can make a world of difference.

As we talked with Cindy, we found ourselves connecting the science to situations we’ve all experienced. Whether it’s staring at a task we know we should start, feeling overwhelmed after a packed day, or wondering why our best ideas seem to show up in the shower, this conversation had us looking at stress from a completely different perspective.

Maybe Stress Isn’t What We Think It Is

One idea kept resurfacing throughout our conversation: stress isn’t always about having too much going on.

Cindy introduced us to the concept of our “window of tolerance,” that sweet spot where our brains are balanced and we’re able to think clearly and move forward. What surprised us was learning that being overstimulated isn’t the only thing that can push us outside that window. Feeling under-stimulated or even bored can have a similar effect.

Why Great Ideas Show Up at the Worst… or Best… Times

We also loved Cindy’s explanation of how our brains shift between different modes of thinking.

It turns out there may actually be a reason those brilliant ideas arrive while we’re taking a walk, standing in the shower, or just staring out the window with a cup of coffee. Sometimes giving ourselves permission to slow down isn’t wasting time at all. It may actually be giving our brains the space they need to connect ideas.

Giving Ourselves a Little Grace

Another part of the conversation we appreciated was Cindy’s reminder that our brains don’t all work the same way.

She carefully distinguished between the experiences of neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals, explaining that stress can look similar while having very different underlying causes. That distinction felt important because it’s easy to compare ourselves to someone else and wonder why certain tasks seem effortless for them but exhausting for us.

We also appreciated Cindy’s simple reminder that every day our brains operate with a limited “body budget.” Every decision, every interruption, and every problem we solve draws from that budget. Once we started thinking about it that way, it naturally led us to ask a better question: what are we doing to refill the tank? That question stayed with us long after the microphones were turned off.

Midwesternism of the Day

This week’s Midwesternism got its start back in the early 1930’s and served a crucial role in supporting our troops during World War II. They even built a museum after it!

We hope you’ll join us for this conversation with Cindy Edwards. Stress isn’t something any of us can eliminate completely. But having a better understanding of why our brains respond the way they do, along with a few practical tools, can make those stressful moments feel a little more manageable.

Until next time, let’s keep learning, sharing, and most importantly, laughing together.

Toodles!
