Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper
Hey there, JDE Connection listeners! We’re back with another episode that dives into the nuts and bolts of JD Edwards. This week, we’re thrilled to have Clayton Seeley join us for a conversation about the fundamentals of CNC (Configurable Network Computing).
Meet the Our Special Guest
This episode is extra special because we’re joined by Clayton Seeley, a long-time JD Edwards expert and wizard behind the curtain. Clayton’s experience spans from support and consulting to product development, making him the perfect guide for our deep dive into CNC. Clayton is currently the senior principal software engineer and product manager responsible for EnterpriseOne Foundation and Lifecycle Management at Oracle.
Why CNC?
Let’s be honest—when Paul first started at JD Edwards, this was the part of class he nearly snoozed through. But as it turns out, CNC is the backbone of JD Edwards, and understanding it can transform how you troubleshoot, optimize, and interact with your system.
What is CNC?
CNC, or Configurable Network Computing, is a legacy term that’s stuck around in the JD Edwards world. As Clayton explained, CNC essentially refers to system administration for JD Edwards. It’s all about knowing where things run and where you get your data from. Think of CNC as the signpost that directs the traffic of your JD Edwards environment—from batch jobs and security settings to data sources and server management.
Breaking Down the Architecture
Clayton walked us through the architecture of an EnterpriseOne instance, demystifying the roles of various servers and how they interact. For instance:
- Database Server: The foundation of everything JD Edwards. If your database server isn’t running smoothly, nothing else will.
- Enterprise Server (Batch/Logic Server): Handles batch jobs, business logic, and workflows. This is where the brain of JD Edwards lives.
- Web Application Server (JAS/HTML Server): Manages the presentation layer and integrates with AIS (Application Interface Services) and BSSV (Business Services Server).
- Deployment Server: Supports updates and provides packages for developers.
- Server Manager: The one-stop-shop for admins to manage, configure, and monitor all the servers.
Making Friends with Your CNC Team
Chandra shared how important it is for Business Analysts to build strong relationships with their CNC teams. Understanding the basics of CNC helps ask the right questions and troubleshoot issues more effectively. Whether it’s pulling logs, interpreting errors, or optimizing performance, a little CNC knowledge goes a long way.
Fun Moments and Midwestern Humor
Of course, no episode would be complete without some laughs. This week we chat “aboat” the 40th anniversary of an outdoor event involving a sport near and dear to Paul’s heart that one typically does not play in the winter. But this is Minnesota where they pre “par tee” to 80’s music and create variations of a simple midwestern staple that would make Guy Fieri proud. This isn’t your grandmother’s chilly.
