Oracle Database 19c SIG Meeting - December 2021

Join us for our monthly Oracle Database 19c SIG Meeting!

Use the Slack REST API to Query and Control Oracle Databases

Presented by Sean Scott, Viscosity North America

Messaging apps do more than facilitate communication—they’re hubs for accelerating work along its journey from idea to assignment to completion. With the arrival of Slack and MS Teams, innovators rushed to create plug-ins that add features and improve workflow. Some of the most popular shift activities formerly performed across multiple tools into chat’s single, familiar focus. What began as a simple mechanism for connecting teams is now an indispensable (and ubiquitous) platform joining people to processes, increasing productivity, and igniting collaboration.

Oracle databases are—so far—largely left out of this conversation. Yet the database has a lot to say! Some benefits of plugging your database into chat:

  • Centralize alerts
  • Automate common DBA, developer, and business functions
  • Increase visibility for stakeholders and management
  • Capture and preserve before-and-after baselines and logs during events
  • Reduce risk during critical or tedious activities
  • Review and validate workflow
  • Eliminate human error and confusion during maintenance operations and issue resolution

After attending this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the risks and benefits of integrating databases with third-party applications
  • Use RESTful services to add an Oracle database to Slack
  • Send messages, logs, and alerts from a database to Slack
  • Write a simple bot to perform database tasks using Slack’s slash command
  • Extend bots with parameters, options, and conditional checks
  • Recognize vulnerabilities and identify potential threats, both externally and internally
  • Deliver defense-in-depth through layered security
