When it comes to modern enterprise applications, most organizations have some key expectations. For starters, we expect them to be highly performant and to scale without our users noticing; a core back-office application like Oracle PeopleSoft will be able to scale during times of peak demand – like student enrollment periods, for example – without needing to overprovision. We’re also expecting that behind the scenes, application developers are able to push updates very quickly; so from one day to the next we’ll see new functionality added to an existing application like flipping a switch. And from a security perspective, we expect modern application security to be integrated and on by default, rather than bolted-on.

But it can be very challenging to get these benefits with on-premises deployments, where availability is difficult and performance requires dedicated infrastructure – and the maintenance, capacity planning, and costly hardware refreshes that go hand-in-hand with these environments. It’s with these challenges in mind that so many on-premises Oracle applications customers are choosing to migrate their workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI.)

Finding improved scale, security, and performance with OCI

Oracle on-premises applications like JD Edwards and PeopleSoft can be migrated to OCI without significant configuration, re-architecture, integration, or business process changes, resulting in an implementation that is more flexible, reliable, higher performance, easier to secure, and lower cost than either on-premises or other cloud approaches.

Thousands of organizations have already migrated Oracle on-premises apps to OCI, such as leading professional services firm Cognizant. The company needed to manage growing demand for its core Oracle PeopleSoft application, used by more than 340,000 employees across human resources, finance, and operations activities. With a tight end-of-month closing cycle, Cognizant could not afford delays in financial processes, but with thousands of employees regularly submitting project timesheets simultaneously, system performance was being impacted.

After searching for cloud infrastructure solutions that would provide the scalability and manageability it required, Cognizant ultimately chose OCI with Oracle Exadata Database Service – only available on OCI – as the best solution for running its PeopleSoft deployment, particularly during times of high traffic when latency and throughput are critical. The company also appreciated Oracle’s policy-based approach to data security and compliance, leading Cognizant to also deploy Oracle Data Safe and OCI Vault.

By migrating PeopleSoft to Oracle Exadata Database Service, Cognizant improved performance by 40% and eliminated capacity issues during peak hours. Cognizant increased the performance, availability, security, and scalability of its critical PeopleSoft applications by migrating production, non-production, and disaster recovery environments to OCI—significantly boosting the company’s agility and reducing business risk.
