The JDE Connection: Episode 118 – CSPUs, 32-Bit, and Keeping JDE Moving Forward

Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper

Hey JDE Connection listeners, Chandra and Paul here! This week, we had questions. Okay, Chandra had questions, and Paul had answers, disclaimers, and the occasional attempt to get ahead of the next question. Pretty standard operating procedure around here.

We spent our conversation digging into two topics JDE customers are hearing more about: Critical Security Patch Updates, or CSPUs, and the continued move away from 32-bit. Neither topic necessarily makes for exciting dinner conversation, unless you happen to have a very specific dinner crowd. But both have practical implications for how customers think about staying current.

Security Is Moving Faster

We started with CSPUs and the obvious question: what changed?

The simplest answer is frequency. Security updates that customers were accustomed to seeing quarterly are now arriving monthly. There is also an application component to the process, which naturally led us down the path of asking how the application and tools updates relate to each other.

As we talked, the bigger picture became more interesting than the mechanics. Security threats continue to evolve, and the tools available to identify vulnerabilities are evolving right along with them. That means the cadence for responding has to evolve too.

32-Bit Has an Expiration Date

From there, we moved into our second topic: 32-bit support.

This one comes with a clearer clock attached. With Release 27, 32-bit application patches will no longer be delivered. For customers still running in that world, this is something to start planning for now.

One part of our conversation we think is especially worth hearing is why this change is happening. EnterpriseOne does not exist on an island. It relies on technologies and components outside of JD Edwards, and those technologies continue to move forward too. At some point, maintaining compatibility with older technology begins limiting where the product can go next.

That makes the 64-bit conversation bigger than checking a technical box. It is about keeping an environment in a position to accept future updates, security fixes, and capabilities.

Midwesternism of the Day

Sometimes our Midwesternisms come with a side of nostalgia, and this week, unfortunately, a little bad news. We recently featured a Minnesota-born candy that’s been around for generations, only to learn shortly afterward that its longtime St. Paul home is closing. Naturally, this led to talk of stocking up, shelf life, and an important question we never expected to ask: what will become of the Minnesota Lunchable? You’ll have to listen to hear which beloved treat has us contemplating a run to the store while we still can.

Until next time, let’s keep learning, sharing, and most importantly, laughing together.

Toodles!
