Integrating eCommerce with JD Edwards and AWS: A Real-World Success Story

In today’s digital marketplace, customer expectations are high, and businesses must deliver seamless eCommerce experiences that integrate with back-end systems. At INFOCUS 2025, Madhusudhan Atmakuru shared how his team at Young Living successfully integrated eCommerce platforms like Shopify and Amazon with JD Edwards (JDE) using AWS Cloud and JD Edwards Orchestrator. Their story highlights how modernization, flexibility, and speed-to-market can redefine success in the eCommerce space.

The Challenge: Speed and Flexibility in a Complex Ecosystem

Young Living, a global manufacturer of essential oils and wellness products, manages a complex supply chain and eCommerce ecosystem across multiple countries. With traditional project cycles taking six months to three years, the IT team faced pressure to respond faster to new marketing and sales initiatives.

The challenge was clear:

  • Integrate multiple eCommerce platforms like Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, and others with JD Edwards.
  • Streamline inventory management and ensure real-time visibility for global promotions.
  • Accelerate project timelines to support marketing campaigns and social influencer initiatives.
  • Maintain compliance in regions with strict regulations, like China.

The Solution: Orchestrating eCommerce with JD Edwards and AWS

The team reimagined their architecture to ensure JD Edwards could serve as the fulfillment and financial backbone, while AWS provided the cloud-native scalability needed for integrations.

Key elements included:

  • JD Edwards Orchestrator to handle near real-time order creation, updates, and refunds.
  • AWS Lambda functions, CloudWatch, and S3 buckets to process and track transactions efficiently.
  • Custom-built orchestration APIs to simplify data exchange between JDE and external eCommerce platforms.
  • Scalable orchestration design that processed hundreds of thousands of requests per day without system instability.

This approach allowed Shopify to manage product catalogs, promotions, and pricing, while JD Edwards remained the system of record for financials, fulfillment, and compliance.

Real-World Use Cases

  1. Shopify Integration – Orders placed in Shopify were seamlessly transmitted into JD Edwards, where fulfillment and financials occurred. Customers benefited from a streamlined checkout process, while JDE tracked financials and returns.
  2. Amazon Prime Model – By linking directly to Amazon’s ecosystem, customers could purchase Young Living products with Prime shipping benefits, while JD Edwards orchestrations ensured accurate financial records and order tracking.
  3. China Market Compliance – Due to regulatory restrictions, the team leveraged AWS S3 and Lambda to manage CSV-based integrations with cross region replication, maintaining compliance without sacrificing functionality.
  4. Scalable Orchestrations – With over 100 orchestrations in play, the team successfully reduced project timelines, launching three major integrations in under six months.

Lessons Learned

  • Leverage the right tools – Using JDE Orchestrator and AWS-native services eliminated the need for heavy custom development.
  • Think globally, act locally – Each market has unique compliance and customer experience needs. The architecture must adapt without overhauling core systems.
  • Prioritize speed-to-market – By standardizing APIs and orchestrations, IT enabled marketing to experiment with influencer campaigns, affiliate models, and new product launches quickly.
  • Plan for scale – Robust session management, multiple AIS servers, and careful load testing were critical to handle peak volumes.

The Impact

By integrating JD Edwards with Shopify, Amazon, and other platforms through AWS, Young Living achieved:

  • Faster go-to-market for new eCommerce initiatives.
  • Improved customer experiences with seamless ordering, fulfillment, and refunds.
  • Greater operational visibility and financial accuracy within JD Edwards.
  • A scalable, cloud-enabled architecture ready for future growth.
