JDE Oracle Database Enhancements: Driving Performance, Continuity, and Innovation

Organizations running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne on Oracle Database know that stability and performance at the database layer are critical for business continuity. At INFOCUS 2025, Pradip Pandey walked attendees through the evolution of Oracle Database enhancements within JD Edwards, highlighting how new features are streamlining database connectivity, improving failover processes, and optimizing workloads across on-premises and cloud environments.

The Journey of Continuous Database Innovation

JD Edwards has steadily expanded its support for Oracle Database capabilities across recent releases. Starting in 9.2.4 with Autonomous Database support for dedicated Exadata infrastructure, customers gained access to self-driving, self-repairing features that enabled planned maintenance with zero downtime. From there, the roadmap has consistently added features to ensure resilience and performance:

  • 9.2.5 / 9.2.6 – Automatic kernel reconnect upon database failure and early support for Autonomous Serverless databases reduced downtime risks and improved connection management.
  • 9.2.7 – Introduction of automated connection checks and recycling to handle connection states during planned outages.
  • 9.2.8 – Manual and automatic scaling for Autonomous Database improved resource allocation and delivered measurable performance boosts.
  • 9.2.9 / 9.2.9.3 – Features such as TCP no-delay and TCP fast open targeted latency issues, enhancing both batch and interactive application performance.

Tackling Latency and Scaling Challenges

Performance tuning has been a major focus. Latency between application and database servers was reduced through configurable fetch sizes, enabling buffered row retrieval instead of row-by-row fetches. Auto Scaling in Autonomous Database further increased CPU and I/O throughput, delivering up to 90% performance gains for database-heavy batch processes.

TCP no-delay and fast open protocols addressed inherent network latency, with customer testing showing up to 25% improvement in address book queries and 15% in purchase order transactions. These changes collectively ensure smoother, faster, and more efficient application performance.

Optimized Session and Connection Management

Upcoming releases will expand on session management with proactive features like:

  • Ping connections – Keeping long-running but idle sessions alive without risking termination by the database.
  • Session recycling – Introducing 12-hour recycling intervals to align with Oracle’s 24-hour timeout policies.
  • Cursor management – Recycling connections before max cursor limits are hit, preventing application failures.
  • Workflow optimizations – Reducing idle environment timeouts from hours to seconds to free up resources faster.

These enhancements balance business continuity with application integrity, ensuring smoother failover during maintenance windows and reducing the risk of unexpected disruptions.

Looking Ahead: Oracle Database 23ai

Pandey emphasized that Oracle Database 23ai is a major milestone for JD Edwards customers. With improvements to connection pooling, long cursor handling, and replay functionality, 23ai removes limitations seen in earlier versions and boosts both performance and data integrity.

Additionally, JD Edwards is adding support for case-insensitive search and collation in Oracle Database, bringing parity with SQL Server and expanding usability for customers who rely on flexible data lookups.

Why This Matters for JD Edwards Customers

For IT leaders and CNCs, these enhancements mean fewer manual interventions, more predictable failover behavior, and measurable performance improvements. For end users, it translates to faster applications, fewer disruptions during maintenance windows, and more confidence in the stability of JD Edwards workloads.

As Pandey noted, this journey reflects Oracle’s commitment to continuous innovation—keeping JD Edwards and Oracle Database aligned for long-term business value.
