Improve Inventory Management with JD Edwards 9.2 Enhancements

Effective inventory management is the backbone of operational efficiency, and JD Edwards (JDE) continues to deliver new tools that simplify complex processes. In his INFOCUS 2025 session, “Improve Inventory Management with 9.2 Enhancements,” Dave Greiner highlighted several powerful updates that give organizations more control, automation, and visibility into their inventory processes.

Location Hold: Smarter Control at the Warehouse Level

Previously, managing inventory holds in JDE required adjustments at the item/lot location level. Each record had to be updated manually—a time-consuming and error-prone process.

With the new Location Hold feature, users can now apply controls at the location master level, eliminating the need to update individual lot records. This enhancement allows organizations to:

  • Place an entire location on hold with a single update.
  • Quarantine materials automatically by designating an MRB cage or other restricted space.
  • Use flexible handling codes to define transaction rules (e.g., allow only incoming, only outgoing, no movement, or returns).
  • Ensure Material Requirements Planning (MRP) excludes or includes specific locations based on processing options.

This update not only streamlines workflows but also provides critical safeguards in scenarios like contamination, damage, or regulatory quarantine.

Automated Safety Stock Maintenance

Safety stock plays a critical role in protecting against demand variability, supply delays, and unexpected disruptions. Historically, JDE users had to calculate and maintain safety stock values manually.

Release 24 introduces program R3425, which automates safety stock calculation. Organizations can now:

  • Choose from multiple calculation methods, including:
    • “Buyer’s Guide” formula (same as used by Buyer’s Inquiry program, Buying Guide report, and PO Generator based on demand history and lead time).
    • Days of demand using historical or future demand data.
    • Percentage of lead-time demand using historical or future demand data.
  • Run in proof mode to review suggested values before committing updates.
  • Import safety stock data from external sources via CSV for added flexibility.

This automation not only reduces manual effort but also ensures more consistent and accurate inventory buffers tailored to business needs.

Non-Blank Approved Lot Statuses

Previously, only a blank lot status was considered approved in JDE, which created audit challenges and limited flexibility. With the new enhancement, system administrators can now configure non-blank approved statuses. This allows businesses to better align inventory approval processes with internal controls and compliance requirements.

Other Noteworthy Updates

In addition to the major enhancements, Greiner highlighted several smaller but impactful updates, including:

  • Supplier Catalog Mass Update – Update effective dates across catalogs in bulk to save time.
  • On-Hand Inventory Repost Program – Recalculate and update item location quantities for reconciliation without custom programs.
  • Item-Based Pricing Operability – Expanded capabilities to support pricing flexibility.
  • Supplier Catalog Item Filter – Streamline searches by filtering item records associated with catalogs.

Finding Resources Faster with the Product Catalog

Finally, Greiner emphasized improvements to the JDE Product Catalog, making it easier to locate feature documentation, Oracle by Example guides, and user resources. A smarter search function helps users quickly find step-by-step guidance for implementing enhancements like non-blank lot statuses or location holds.

Why These Enhancements Matter

Inventory management is often where efficiency gains translate directly into cost savings and risk reduction. With these enhancements in JD Edwards 9.2, businesses can:

  • Reduce manual updates and the risk of errors.
  • Better safeguard materials in quarantine or restricted locations.
  • Automate critical safety stock calculations for reliability.
  • Improve compliance and audit readiness.

For JDE users, Release 24’s inventory enhancements represent not just incremental improvements but significant steps toward smarter, leaner operations.
