Having worked with EnterpriseOne for 14 years, Andy Lopez, Business Analyst Supervisor at Spirax Sarco, is deeply knowledgeable about integrations, upgrades, and iSeries infrastructure.  His advice to other JD Edwards users is to start thinking through their JD Edwards infrastructure strategy before they get too dependent on single servers.

If you’re using the following UDO system dependencies, you might need to examine your underlying resiliency:

• Personal Forms
• Advanced Queries
• Form Extensions
• Form Extensions calling Orchestrations
• Scheduled Orchestrations
• Integrations

Those who grow organically, as Andy’s company did, may find all PD Web Instances pointing to a single AIS Instance, which in turn points back to a single E1 Web Instance. This introduces two single points of failure.

In his situation, any one of two servers going down meant almost everything stopped—because most projects involved a component dependent on those servers. He recognized this issue and began communicating with management about adding more robust JD Edwards infrastructure.

E1 has multiple approaches to address this issue:

• For Scheduled jobs, this will involve learning about Quartz Scheduler, Stateless Load Balancing, Authorization Tokens. See Doc ID 2368608.1, Doc ID 2751113.1, and Doc ID 2786382.1 for a starting point, but count on needing review at Infrastructure and/or Managerial Level along with CNC support.
• For AIS Servers, see Oracle Doc ID 1996565.1 for a broad overview of four different approaches at different levels of cluster implementations.

As you begin to consider new infrastructure, Andy recommends involving your infrastructure specialist (if you have one) and your management team for cost/benefit analysis. It may be a complex decision-making process as you try to ascertain your company’s risk tolerance.

Don’t wait to examine your JD Edwards infrastructure needs. Be proactive so one server outage doesn’t shut down your entire operation.
